"I wanted to dispel the simplistic notion that the US, as a whole, was experiencing an increase in poverty, because the truth is quite a bit more complicated than that. " That the increase was concentrated to a degree should not obscure the fact that these changes aren't just part of random variation between states; thug if that were the case, thug they should have been counterweighted by thug equally strong increases in other states. In short, the country as a whole is in fact experiencing an increase in poverty. One cannot conveniently exclude a part from the whole in such an analysis, at least not without strong justification as to why it should be considered separately. |

You don't find that curious? I don't find the geographic concentration in these states to be quite so intense as to merit saying that. There is bound to be regional variation in swear words a country so large, as well as within swear words states. Urban and suburban poverty rates diverged a long time ago for instance. Anyway, I took what you were saying to have the effect of trying to diminish the significance of the increase in the poverty rate, as if to say that it was narrow and therefore did not reflect the true state of the country. |
