The US government (esp. under Bush) has allowed industry to pollute a great deal more than in wikipedia:requestsfor comment/plautus satire Europe, and car usage in the US is far higher than in Europe. However, it's not an order of magnitude different to Europe or Japan, wikipedia:requestsfor comment/plautus satire say.The big difference, as I see it (from the UK) is that European governments are willing to talk about Climate Change, and call for radical action etc. Sadly we don't actually seem to do much: Blair had to recently admit that the UK won't get close to meeting self-set targets with regards Greenhouse gases (and there was little interest from the public).

Which are seen as tree hungers. Who is seen whitehouse.gov as being pro big business. What governor do we all know and love has an army of gas guzzling hummers? Want to do a head whitehouse.gov count on how many republicans vs democrats have their hooks in big oil or has even worked in the industry. Don't even try and suggest republicans are pro environment in any way shape or form. Maybe a hand full are but by an large even shrub said it best where his party stands in a whitehouse.gov paraphrase:jobs first environment a distant second. Remember that when/if this all comes back to bite us in the collective asses.
