Re: gulf war Poverty? by ppilot at Thu 1 Sep 12:29pmscore of 1 in reply to comment 70 The poor are largely fat because it's cheaper to eat at McDonald's than it is to cook a meal. Inexpensive foods (bread, pasta, potatoes, etc) are all starchy, nutritionally void and fattening, even when cooked gulf war at home. Of course, cooking a meal can be a struggle when you're holding down two or three jobs. We're veering (careening?) off target, but people say this all the time and I don't think it's true. If four people go out to eat at Mickey D's, and order off the value menu, a sandwich, fries and drink cost what, $2.99 to 3.99? Say $2.99. So the meal costs $12 plus tax. A person could buy a whole chicken for $5, a pound of fresh green beans for $2, 5 lbs of potatoes for $2.50, and a gallon of milk for $2.50, total 12 bucks, no tax. Four healthy meals of chicken, beans, potatoes and milk, boil the carcass and make soup/stew with the leftover vegetables for four more meals, again with milk.
