might help if you pointed out how the current number of those living in girl poverty and the increase from 2000 is "out of context"...Because it doesn't take the increase girl in total population into account. Would you be impressed girl if I told you that the number of people in 2000 in poverty (31 million) was greater than the number in 1980 (29 million)? Sure, there are 6 million more poor people than in 2000, but there are also 7 million more who are not poor. [ ...reply just to this | comment on the story... | next new ] 58. Re: Say that to millions more living in poverty by Catch22 at Wed 31 Aug 1:01pmscore of 1 in reply to comment 48 Adjusting for the increase in population does provide a better figure, but providing the raw numbers still is informative and hardly anywhere near as problematic when comparing 2004 to 2000 as it is when comparing 2004 to 1980 as you suggest. Even fully adjusted for the population increase (using 291 million as the populaton at the end of 2004 and 275 million as the population at the end of 2000) there are still 4 million more in poverty today than there would have been if the rate had remained stagnant.
