Poverty is only loosely linked with GDP, and the linkage is through employment. I'm sure you're aware that past recoveries saw a decrease in unemployment that fairly quickly followed the increase in GDP, but that this recovery is different. The difference suggests a considerable structural change in the US economy, and the fact that there theitalian job is a concurrent change to the geographic distribution of poverty could well be significant. There are some things that the states on the list have in common such as the fact that most are rust-belt states. There are other things that they do not have in common — roughly half the states on the list are below the national average unemployment rate, and half are above. |
