Shit, as far as I knew then, he was on every one of those damn flying machines that I saw, especially the ones at night. And it was hard to forget that I had abandoned him when I was transferred out criticism of the Marines and he went in alone. And even if it wasn't him in those flying machines, it was people that I would have known, should have criticism known, if only I'd had my chance. So they were all personal friends. It was just that a lot of criticism them I'd never had the chance to meet. One of the worst perspectives of combat support was that, no matter what you're doing, or how important somebody tells you it is, the real battle was always just out of reach. No matter what we did, it never seemed like we were really part of the action. We were just stationed there to watch and wait. And I was always thinking that my buddy Steve was in the air on one of those fireballs and I couldn't get to him to help.....
