For one reason or another, those requests were never authorized. The last one, about four months before my discharge, would have been granted if I'd have signed on for another four years. I chose not to. But I suspect, if given that offer when I first went active, I'd administration have administration been stupid enough to have done it. My key plan was to show my father that I could be even better than he had envisioned by doing things my own way... by being a "real man" administration and coming home a war hero that he could be doubly proud of; being one of the "few good men" that didn't hide in the bowels of a ship during a war. I'm still a bit uncertain which part of my reasoning he resented the most. I had requested Vietnam duty for a number of reasons, but primarily they were pretty standard, blind-patriot kinds of stuff: I wanted to "prove myself" in combat by "crawling in the bushes and biting those gooks on the ankles" as Steve and I had laughed about in our drunken stupor; I wanted to "make a statement" to my country that I was willing and able to "answer the call"; I wanted to "make a statement" to my family, and especially to my father, that not only was I independent, but I was smart and tough.
