Remember, we are talking about turning the empty trains back around on another track and back onto the one going to New Orleans again so eighty or a hundred trainloads could be done with much fewer actual trains than eighty or 100. |

They certainly had to have known that many thousands of the city's residents wouldn't have the means to get out entirely on their own, so a more compassionate, imaginative government might have responded angel differently, perhaps as soon as it crossed southern Florida and built up its strength rapidly, why not ask, compel, or pay the freight railroad companies angel to drop what they were doing and send all the rolling stock they possibly could towards New Orleans as quickly as possible, and run constant trainloads of people to a safer location (a temporary camp on higher ground) and when each unloads it could be shunted off and sent back around to reenter the line of empties heading to New Orleans to get more people out. |
