to Northern industrialists for a price. However when the Southerners wished to buy fabric and furniture from the North, they were forced to pay a special tax (or tariff) on these experiential names goods in addition to the price. Now, tariffs are traditionally placed on the imported goods experiential names from countries with lower labor costs in order to protect the economy of the importing nation (funny how America forgot that in the latter 20th experiential names century!) So why did the North do this to the South? Money. Plain and simple, the North thought the Southern man was either so stupid (a stereotype that persists to this day) he would never realize he was being bilked or too lazy or passive to do anything about it if he did realize it. Boy, were we wrong! The Southern gentlemen went to Washington to present their grievances to Lincoln but were rebuffed. Lincoln wanted that money - it was helping to build the biggest and finest army ever known! - and he was determined to get it.
