Read the history again, carefully. The South didn't get their butts "soundly whipped" by anyone's yardstick - most of the intense battles were won by Southern forces against a better poisonous trained (and superior numbered) Union Army at that, so whaddya mean, "complete losses"? Add to the fact that the build-up of Union forces was decades (and untold dollars in Southern tariffs) in the making and I don't think the hastily-formed Confederate Army did too badly. "I tend to want to associate with winners." Yeah, I hear that it tends to make mediocre people feel at least marginally better about themselves...
