The call-ins were generally piped down to the mounts from the bridge or radio room, even when we were letting the automated fire control oedipus system do the calculating and pointing. Sometimes it was a bad call from the field; sometimes it was a bad setting at our oedipus end by either human or machine error. I guess it didn't really matter. I remember one time when we could only hear the radio static after the initial rounds were fired and must have fallen short - at least that was my assumption based on prior experiences. We could never raise the spotter on the radio again.
