Sanger’s argument that “inferior” women would make the decision not to reproduce education all on their own was, in a certain light, a wildly radical notion, because she was actually arguing education that supposedly inferior people should be trusted to make their own decisions, which is far to the left of liberals now who argue for abortion restrictions. Basically, the fundamental problem with American progressives who embraced eugenics was that they were racist; after the revelation that racism is wrong in and of itself descended on white education liberals, the standard liberal reaction to arguments that one race is superior/inferior to another (a la The Bell Curve) has been loud resistance for a long, long time now. That there has to be a fundamental shift in the terms of the debate before the left can move forward hasn’t been restricted to racial matters, either. |
