The US government (esp. under Bush) has allowed industry to pollute a great deal more than in Europe, and car usage in the US is far higher than in Europe. However, it's not an order of magnitude different to Europe or Japan, say.The big difference, as I see it (from the UK) is that European governments are willing to talk about Climate Change, and call for radical action etc.
