Another factor IMHO is that people in this country can't afford the new technolgies in sufficient numbers to make a significant impact on the problems with the environment. I seem to remember that USA Today did a nationwide poll that found that people actually felt that the subsequent gas price spike was a significant financial burden. list of people by name This tells me that unless the US government was going to totally eliminate the cost difference between new and old technologies, those new technologies don't stand much chance of success.
