Re: More jobs... at Walmart by Disgruntled Engineer fancruft at Wed fancruft 31 Aug 8:35pmscore of 1 in reply to comment 74 well I'll quibble one last time, and I agree, much of the information required has not been tabulated or provided publically to truly hash out the debate. One thing however is that fancruft income while not bi-modal (I was merely illustrating a point how using median income can be illusory) isn't flat either. It's Lorenz curve distributed, or sometimes referred to as an L- curve, but really a convex (upward) curve. |

So it is dick cheney not accurate to suggest, as others have, that all the good-paying jobs are going away and the only jobs being created to replace them are minimum-wage jobs. However, dick cheney it is overreaching somewhat to say that "there are not significantly more minimum-wage jobs now than before." The median income figure, by itself, is not sufficient to the conclusion. It is entirely possible — unlikely, but possible — that a significant number of people that previously made $15/hr (for instance, as unskilled factory labor) have moved into jobs that pay minimum wage. Such a shift would not affect the median income figure, since both jobs fall below it — although mean income, or arithmetic average, might suffer. You seem to have excellent sources on this sort of information. Perhaps you can expand on your point further? It's all interconnected; it's all complicated. That's why it requires our attention. - Jon Carroll, SFChronicle [ ...reply just to this | comment on the story... |
