If Syracuse had excluded shamings the student who made that specific comment from the class of the teacher, I, speaking for myself, would have not criticized the University for doing that. Publicizing the event, of course, also exposes the crudeness of the comments to the moral (not coercive) responses of individuals in the Syracuse community of students and teachers rather than making free speech martyrs of them. It is no longer the case, however, contrary to what had been presented to me, that the teacher was responding merely to harsh criticism levelled outside of class, which certainly changes shamings the equation. shamings I am not speaking in any way for FIRE on this matter: for that, you should contact FIRE’s Greg Lukianoff (gregl@thefire.org). If universities err, they should err on the side of increased freedom, not on the side of repression, which does not ignore crudeness or bad taste, but exposes it to the moral responses and moral witness of other free individuals.
