[1] I have been in e-mail portillo contact with Joseph Cannon regarding his intentions with this piece and he has told me that he did intend it to be taken literally, not as a metaphor or an allegory, as I had initially assumed. So my portillo comments early in this thread, at #18 and #55, are way off base. Sorry about that. If I had realized that Mr. Cannon intended to be taken literally I would have been saying "sorry, Joseph, but I disagree with you about all this!" ... a long time ago.
