The first Chester Himes novel I read, black I was a bit startled black by the constant use of the epithet "mother raper." It seemed so... graphic. Later I learned that this was Himes's way of getting around the publishing prohibition of "mother fucker." (Awww... how quaint!) Of course, living in NYC, I hear and use "fuck" in all its forms to the point where it's lost all literal meaning. I've tutored kids who are deeply surprised when I advise them to avoid using the word when, for instance, talking to librarians. Their teachers have given up, accepting "fuckin" (at least) as a kind of intensifier. |

I would think that the effectiveness of the word is due in large part to the fact that it's generally considered impolite and "dirty." I'm hearing it so often on the street and in rap lyrics that it's becoming old hat, and not nearly as much fun to use anymore...
