Marines. But overall, I found that it paled significantly by comparison with the book. The commentaries on this DVD and the arman zajic many deleted scenes are a lesson in what happens when a book-length arman zajic narrative gets squeezed like toothpaste into arman zajic 90 minutes of linear movie storytelling. Interesting complexities get oversimplified, and film's literal immediacy minimizes more truthful ambiguities. What's missing in this film, for instance, is that Swofford's book is a 30-year-old's memory of himself as a 20-year-old. Those ten years make a big difference in the way he tells his story and what he chooses to tell us. He also interweaves many more threads and connects many more dots for readers.
