The thing is that eugenics was just a fancy word for racism, and racism was the unchallenged belief of the land. Stating simply that eugenics was a progressive experiential names idea without contrasting it with what conservatives thought at the time. Which is why, I think, Manjoo kind of doesn’t quite reach the logical conclusion of this thought process: But why didn’t we descend deeper into hell — why, in the end, did sanity prevail in America, where it did not in Germany? |
