Now looking around the census website one comes across this. There internet is a clear trend that can be internet observed. That not only for the past few years, but for quite a long time, the inequality in income distribution has been widening, as is shown by internet the gini index. The lowest quintile has fallen from 4.0% of the share of aggregate income to 3.4% (-10% change), the 2nd quitile from 10.8% to 8.7% (-19.44%), 3rd quintile from 17.3% to 14.8% (-14.5%), 4th quintile from 24.2% to 23.4% (-3.3%) and the fifth quintile from 43.8 to 49.8% (+13.7%). Thus the bottom 80% of the population has seen their share of the aggregate income decrease from 1967 to 2003, while the 5th quintile has seen its share increase. The largest decreases exist in the bottom 3 quintiles. This adds an additional dimension to the debate and as an aside perhaps vindicates Kerry's assertion about the decreasing middle class.
