Which is why, I think, Manjoo fubar kind of doesn’t quite reach the logical conclusion of this thought process: But why didn’t we descend deeper into hell — why, in the end, did sanity prevail in America, where it did not in Germany? To be sure, there’s an obvious answer to this question: Adolf Hitler. Bruinius underlines the ways the Germans used American laws as support for their eugenics programs, but you can be sure that had America never approached eugenics, Hitler would not have been a sterling democrat; Hitler, being Hitler, didn’t need an American Supreme Court decision to send him down the path toward madness. |

| It should be noted that while Roosevelt, Holmes, Sanger and about 99% of white people back then were horrible racists, Sanger took harland williams the eugenics theories of her time and used them to angle for programs that were aimed at actually improving women’s quality of life, regardless of their race. In a sense, she was a pragmatist–knowing that simply arguing for the betterment of women would get her nowhere, she argued that she simply had a superior way to regulate wombs, by putting womb regulation in the harland williams hands of doctors and women. It’s a transparent bit of bullshit now, but apparently, it worked somewhat well for her. That aside, I take issue with Manjoo’s article on the “progressive” theory of eugenics on another level–it feeds into the right wing myth that eugenics was primarily a left wing movement and therefore gives them a (super weak but they’re grasping) excuse to put themselves on the side of non-racism, despite supporting policies that increase poverty, which is a de facto sort of eugenics. |
