Data mining has spread from areas movies with gigantic movies numbers of transactions, like supermarkets, outward to many other industries. One would hope this will be a positive development as the algorithms involved allow for predictive modeling that is more flexible than classical statistics. In essence it allows for many variables to be used without a pre-planned idea of what the important ones (those with predictive value) will be.
