The first Chester Himes novel I read, I was a bit startled by the constant use of the 2 pac download epithet "mother raper." It seemed so... graphic. Later I learned that this was Himes's way of getting around the publishing prohibition of "mother fucker." (Awww... how quaint!) Of course, living in NYC, I hear and use "fuck" in all its forms to the point where it's lost all literal meaning. I've tutored kids who are deeply surprised when I advise them to avoid using the word when, for instance, talking to librarians.
