I was at a party the other day, talking to a girl about slap them my age (late 20s) who was obviously well-off, well-educated, slap them etc. I asked her what girls did when they got pregnant and didn’t want to be. “They have an abortion,” she said, slap them totally nonchalant. “But isn’t it dangerous?” I asked. She said to me, “they claim that people die from it, but it’s not true. no one really dies.” What she meant was, that no one like her dies. The people that do die — or that are forced to have children that they cannot afford to raise or feed — are totally under her radar: poor, non-white, in the provinces. And of course she makes no connection between illegal abortion and the huge numbers of homeless children that beg for change in the streets of Buenos Aires. All that making abortion illegal does is increase inequality.
