| (Anybody who thinks that Katrina was due to global warming is an idiot; killer hurricanes have been part of a natural cycle since ftw whenever, it's just that the most recent cycle occurred at a time before many of you were born, and before overdevelopment and 24/7 media, so you simply have no collective memory of it.) Rampant development occurred during this time, under Republican and Democratic administrations at the municipal, county, state, ftw and federal levels, with little attention paid to civil defense ftw infrastructure in the event of a catastrophic hurricane event. N.O. was particularly vulnerable, as we can all now see. But it's not the POTUS's job to protect people against stupidity. I in fact recently turned down a job offer in N.O. because I knew that we were entering a much more active hurricane cycle and that investing in N.O. real estate, let alone living there, would be a risk. I guess I was more right than I imagined.Having lived most of my life in hurricane zones, there is no doubt in my mind that local and state governments have to take the lead on setting priorities for infrastructural issues in preparing for hurricanes. |
