At the end, the film doesn't even tell us what has happened to him. See extremist the film, if you keep in mind that it asks us to settle for a lot less than what Swofford originally wrote. This doesn't make it a bad movie, just a reminder of what the printed extremist word can achieve in the hands of a fine writer. Oh, and read the book. Was this review helpful to you? No I wasn't looking for a lot of action and if that's what you're looking for, look for another movie. I didn't care for the storyline, I didn't think there was much of anything there. I didn't care for the acting. |

The listen music performances and the photography in the film go a long way to capturing the time and place of Swofford's story and portraying the particular culture that is specific to the U.S. Marines. But overall, I found that it paled significantly by comparison with the book. The commentaries on this DVD and the many deleted scenes are a lesson listen music in what happens when a book-length narrative gets squeezed like toothpaste into 90 minutes of linear movie storytelling. Interesting listen music complexities get oversimplified, and film's literal immediacy minimizes more truthful ambiguities. What's missing in this film, for instance, is that Swofford's book is a 30-year-old's memory of himself as a 20-year-old. Those ten years make a big difference in the way he tells his story and what he chooses to tell us. He also interweaves many more threads and connects many more dots for readers. More mystifying is the wish of the filmmakers (as explained in the commentaries) to make the character of Swofford's friend Troy more ambiguous by withholding information about him. |
