How many total indie freight-trainloads to move everyone that couldn't move? Eighty? A hundred? Remember, we are talking about turning the empty trains back around on another track and back onto the one going indie to New Orleans again so eighty or a hundred trainloads could be done with much fewer actual trains than eighty or 100. Running them constantly with another arriving right after indie the last one left full of people would be a hassle, but a lot of lives were at stake. Did anyone in the government even suggest an idea like this? Also consider, the Navy has sent a few ships including the hospital ship 'Comfort', but why isn't it trying to use what would be ideal for evacuating masses of people, its amphibious assult ships that each have several flat-bottomed landing craft that can run right up to the beach? You could fit fifty or so people in each craft and they shuttle them back out to its mothership as it were, dropping off the people at the ship and the empty landing craft turning around and going back for more people.
