What's missing in this film, for instance, is that Swofford's book is a 30-year-old's memory poem of himself as a poem 20-year-old. Those ten years make a big difference in the way he tells his story and what he chooses to tell us. He also interweaves many more threads and connects many more dots for readers. More mystifying is the wish of the filmmakers (as explained in the commentaries) to make the character of Swofford's friend Troy more ambiguous by withholding information about him. Their poem friendship is central to the book, yet the film makes a puzzle out of it. At the end, the film doesn't even tell us what has happened to him. |

The performances and the photography in the film go a long way to capturing the time and place of Swofford's story and portraying the particular culture that is specific to the U.S. Marines. But overall, I found that it paled significantly by comparison with the book. The commentaries on this DVD and the many deleted scenes are a lesson in what happens when a book-length narrative gets squeezed like toothpaste into 90 minutes of linear movie storytelling. |
