The Southerners would sell their abundant raw materials (cotton, timber, etc.) to Northern industrialists for a price. However when the Southerners wished to buy fabric and furniture from the North, they were forced to pay a special tax (or tariff) on directors these goods in addition to the price. Now, tariffs are traditionally placed on the imported goods from countries with lower labor costs in order to protect the economy of the importing nation (funny how America forgot that in the latter 20th century!) So why did the North do this to the South? |

You need to be aware that the first colony (not state...yet!) to sanction slavery was Massachusetts in 1641. Wow! Over 200 years before the Confederacy was even envisioned! Slavery was practiced in the North and the industry was headquartered in the North (New Jersey) and lest I be branded an "anti-Semite", I won't tell you that it was largely run and financed by "the Chosen People, Inc." |
