This psychological principle works at the individual level as well as at the macro level. Racism (which I define as the very belief in the biological existence of ‘race’) is a social construct that developed in response to human beings’ need lyrics to justify their abuses of one another. Eugenics– regifted as a lyrics ’science’ devoted to bettering humanity– is nothing if not corollary to racism. Likewise, the right-wing propensity to cast every apparently negative lyrics cultural or political element as a progressive toxin is just more cognitive dissonance at work. For a long time I wanted to believe that most wingers were being dishonest when they came up with this shit, but now I’m beginning to understand that they really believe it. |

It is well to remember that eugenics existed in a pre-DNA awareness age. The “bad seed” idea was very strong at the time. Still, to compare modern rap lyric feminists to eugenicists is beyond ludicrous. 13 Magis Mar 4th, 2006 at 9:47 pm @#!!** No Preview 14 tigtog Mar rap lyric 5th, 2006 at 12:01 am Amanda, you are unfortunately all too right about the rape culture being the result of social conditioning rather than genetics. I was just feeling especially misanthropic earlier. 15 Lorenzo Mar 5th, 2006 at 1:42 am rap lyric This bit of misinformation has legs because one of the tenets of patriarchal belief is that women’s interests and the interests of society are at fundamental odds, which is why, unfortunate as it may seem to soft-hearted libruls, women must be oppressed for the common good. Holy shit, Amanda! You have a way making complex social assumptions easy to understand through a pithy turn of phrase! Of course, under their terms, they were right. After all, if you are to define women’s interests as opposed to ’society’s interest’ then you necessarily exclude women from that society and thus the statement is reductible to ‘women’s interests are opposed to patriachy’s interests’, which, of course, is true. |
