Methinks maybe it’s because if he buys a shitload of drugs, the stock price increases, and he gets back about $20,000 (at most) of his $6,000,200,000 initial investment. In the bigger picture, he makes back way more than a percentage of what his foundation buys in drugs. By vigorously supporting the patent laws even in bronson pinchot crisis situations, he ensures that pharma will be able to maintain their profits and make him bronson pinchot money in the future (they sold microsoft shares when they bought pharma shares – canny business move). Sure, he is still giving bronson pinchot away a shitload of money – I never questioned that. I seriously doubt that there aren’t other bonuses coming to Gates from being a major stockholder in Merck, etc. – there is a tacit “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” code on this level of business dealing. I don’t see any point in digging through financial documents to find examples so you can say that it is unfounded in this case but to deny it happens regularily would be naive.
