And we don't have pure capitalism, nor would I argue for it. Dang straight. Capitalism is the greatest engine for progress yet discovered, but it requires honest referees and a level playing field to work. Even Adam Smith recognized that the interests of capital and the interests of the nation (or the people, if you will) are not always in alignment. Those who believe in unfettered capitalism should be called utopian capitalists and they are no smarter than believers in any other utopian system. |

But my frequent run ins with communists and socialists of different stripes have shown a group pretty intent on having a pure form of government -- my analogy, as I mentioned above, is similarly applicable to supply siders, et al. As it is, there are a number of functioning, nominally capitalistic countries on earth doing pretty damn well, both for their citizens and, in aggregate (though to a lesser degree), for the rest of the world. |
