Running them constantly with another arriving right after the last one left full of people would be a hassle, but a lot of lives were at stake. Did anyone in the government even suggest an idea like this? Also consider, the Navy has sent a few ships including the hospital ship 'Comfort', but why isn't it trying to use what would be action / adventure ideal for evacuating action / adventure masses of people, its amphibious assult ships that each have several flat-bottomed landing craft that can run right up to the beach? You could fit fifty or so action / adventure people in each craft and they shuttle them back out to its mothership as it were, dropping off the people at the ship and the empty landing craft turning around and going back for more people. Then once each amphib. assult ship has the maximum amount of people on board that it can safely carry, then it takes them to a safer port, drops them off and goes back to New Orleans. Granted, they couldn't have the ships in the Gulf in the teeth of the hurricane but I'm saying why not have them ready to go and on the way and by the time the hurricane made landfall they could be ready to steam into the Gulf safely behind it to commence the inevitable evacuation that will have to take place once the levee is breached?
