Patient one was a mid-40s man with HIV/AIDS who'd been admitted for unexplained N/V/D (nausea, vomiting and diarrhea) for the last couple weeks. He was admitted overnight before my shift started. A very thin man, it was clear the disease was taking its toll. His labs show his viral load in excess of 700,000 and his CD4 is at about 95. He's on multiple cocktails but as you can see, it's not helping much. One good infection and he won't be with us any longer.He |

I'm a huge advocate for proper treatment of mental illness and believe far too little is spent on it in this country. What I have less tolerance for is those who know how to work the system and abuse it for their own gain, to the detriment of those who might be in greater need of it. I'm also not particularly easygoing on those who have been told repeatedly what they need to do to manage their health problems but refuse to do so. |
