The commentaries on this DVD and steve the many deleted scenes are a lesson in what happens when a book-length narrative gets squeezed like toothpaste into 90 minutes of linear movie storytelling. Interesting complexities get oversimplified, and film's literal immediacy minimizes more truthful ambiguities. What's missing in this film, for instance, is that Swofford's book is a 30-year-old's memory of himself as a 20-year-old. Those ten years make steve a big difference in the way he tells his story and what he chooses to tell us. |

The movie may not have too many scenes of action, brad pitt but there is plenty of drama and emotion nonetheless. This is a brad pitt movie that is definitely worth seeing, but be forewarned...there is a fairly large amount of sexual humor, nudity, and masturbation in this film (as odd as that might sound). The performances and the photography in the film go a long way to capturing the time and place of Swofford's story and portraying the particular culture that is specific to the U.S. |
