Progressives didn’t share a coherent ideology: some of them were basically conservative and some of them leaned towards the left. What they shared was a sense that social bonds were being threatened by rapid social change and a belief that this could only be napolean dealt with through careful study and scientific reform. What made eugenics “progressive” napolean was the emphasis on rational, scientific reform as a solution to the “problem” of the declining quality of America’s population. It appealed to both left and right-leaning progressives. Lefties don’t have any special guilt (or innocence) on this one. |
