Before the nauseating attempts to make housewifery sound like the only way that urban all women can be happy, the argument for society doing everything in its urban power to keep women at urban home was that despite the harm it did to women, it was necessary for harmonious home life. So on and so forth–which is why feminism has always been one of the most consistently radical philosophies of the left, because even when it fell under the spell of racist madnesses or what have you, generally speaking feminists ultimately end up rejecting the notion that women’s lives and bodies should be commandeered for the good of others at the expense to themselves. That’s why I read this article by Farhad Manjoo about the “progressive” eugenics of a century ago with a heavy heart, because he neglects to mention that for the pro-eugenics left in America, the amount of force deemed necessary varied considerably between the individuals he lists as those on record supporting eugenics.
