The first Chester Himes novel I read, I was a bit scott macdonald startled by the constant use scott macdonald of the epithet "mother raper." It seemed so... graphic. Later I learned that this was Himes's way of getting around the publishing prohibition of "mother fucker." (Awww... how quaint!) Of course, living in NYC, I hear and use "fuck" in all its forms to the point where it's lost all literal meaning. I've tutored kids who are deeply surprised when I advise them to avoid using the word when, for instance, talking to librarians. Their teachers have given up, accepting "fuckin" (at least) as a kind of intensifier. Like bumping "really" up to 11. The real test is when the NYTimes allows the word to appear in its august pages. |

| I would think that the effectiveness of the word is due in large part to the fact that it's generally considered impolite and "dirty." I'm hearing it so often on the street and in rap lyrics that it's becoming old hat, and not nearly jtkiefer as much fun to use anymore...
